Breaking Down the Steps to Success Group Tutoring: Which Group is Right for Your Child?
As we gear up for the launch of Steps for Success Group Tutoring this December, it’s important to ensure your child is placed in the group that best meets their current reading needs. These small group sessions are structured to target foundational and advanced phonics skills, as shown in the phoneme breakdown in the chart below.
Here’s a closer look at what each group offers and how to determine where your child fits:
Steps 1 & 2: Building the Foundation
Meets for 30 minutes every Friday
This group is designed for students who are still mastering foundational reading skills. If your child is working on accurately reading and spelling short vowel sounds (e.g., cat, bed, pin) and VCE (silent e) long vowel words (e.g., cake, tape, Steve), this is the perfect fit.
We’ll focus on the phonemes listed in Steps for Success 1 and 2:
Step 1 Phonemes:
- Consonants and short vowel sounds: a, b, f, h, z, j, k, m, p, t, r, l, w, d, n, s, e, c, i, g, u, th, o, wh, y, v, x, ck, sh, ch
Step 2 Phonemes:
- Silent e and vowel team patterns: qu, a-e, e-e, i-e, o-e, u-e, y
These sessions will lay the groundwork for fluent reading by solidifying letter-sound relationships and decoding strategies, ensuring students feel confident and capable in their reading journey.
Steps 3, 4 & 5: Advancing Reading Mastery
Meets for 30 minutes every Friday
For students who are reading and spelling short vowel and VCE long vowel words with ease, this group offers the next level of support. These sessions will target more advanced phonics patterns and help students grow their reading fluency, comprehension, and spelling skills.
We’ll focus on the phonemes listed in Steps for Success 3, 4, and 5:
Step 3 Phonemes:
- Advanced letter patterns: ar, tch, or, er, ir, ur, dge, ind, old, ost, ild, -ng, -nk
Step 4 Phonemes:
- Vowel teams and other patterns: ay, oa, ai, aw, ee, ea, ie, ow, oi, oo, ue, oy, oe, ou, ew, igh
Step 5 Phonemes:
- Complex patterns and endings: tion, au, ph, sion, ire, ain, cle
This group is ideal for students who need reinforcement with these advanced phonemes to take their reading and spelling to the next level.
